Every farmer looks forward to harvesting after weeks, months or years of toiling, whether it is animal husbandry, aquaculture, vegetable gardens or plantations. The question is always. ” . . when will I reap what I have sown?”
For first timers and those embarking on projects that are expected to takes several years, quality, quantity and time are factors that are always considered.
How to tell avocado variety
Avocado trees grown from seed can be difficult to predict in terms of cultivar, flowering pattern, fruit yield, fruit maturing and general tree behavior. Often times, you may want to use shape, skin type, skin color, fruit size, oiliness and other variables like seed to flesh ratio to find a matching or similar variety. In cross fertilization, you might ultimately come up with your own unique variety which I believe I might have been able to achieve in one of my trees.

Multi cultivars on one non-grafted avocado tree.
This variety seems to have three varieties of avocados on one tree and the tree was seed grown with no grafting.
Fruit Harvest
The time an avocado takes from pollination to being ready for harvesting and ultimately, for consumption, varies depending on the variety.
Considering that flowers started appearing July/August 2024 and much fruit had set by September, this cultivar is estimated to be ready for harvest February/March 2025. That would be approximately six months from fruit set to harvest, making it about eight month from flower blooming to harvest.
My experience with two varieties, is that some fruit can ripen on the tree and be plucked ready for eating and others ripen once taken off the tree.
I have another variety that flowered around the same period (August 2024) but take a look at the fruit as at February 2025. I am expecting them to be hanging onto the tree for a few more months!!
